Comic - Colin Tedford
I recently enjoyed watching the documentary
Exit Through the Gift Shop (This post contains a spoiler.). The film is about (illegal) street art and some of better-known characters who practice it. In the film, there’s a newcomer with dubious skills, sanity, and originality. In the end, he outsells his more “legitimate” peers (one of whom made the film) even though it appears he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He starts out with money to spend so he hires people to (help) make his art, put up his show, and – more importantly – markets the living hell out of it. He advertises everywhere and gets a huge crowd. His pieces sell for pie-in-the-sky prices.
I know know how fair the documentary is to him – he’s not cast in a positive light. But… this is a good example of how someone can achieve fame (and fortune?) instantly with the right marketing strategy. I’m not recommending anyone try to do something similar – it’s risky and most of us don’t have the financial base anyway. (Plus prices for music and visual art are incomparable.) Still, it’s instructive in showing what’s possible. So much for the idea of “paying your dues”…

I think the documentary points out that we can be whatever we like to be and have success to it if we’re not afraid of taking risks together with the right skills and attitude. Just like the main character has done. He never doubted what he would do, because he wanted it.
